MN Sesquicentennial Sign

Friday, March 14th, 2008

MN Sesquicentennial Commission staff & signMinnesota celebrates 150 years of statehood this year.  How many of you have noticed the highway entry sign put up on Highway 169 at the Iowa border from the Minnesota Sesquicentennial Commission?

“These highway signs are the first point of hospitality for anyone coming into Minnesota during its sesquicentennial year,” said Sesquicentennial Commission Executive Director Jane Leonard.  “We hope they set a tone of friendship and welcome to our home during this special year.”

The large signs (approximately 5.5 feet across and 2.5 feet tall) read “Minnesota 1858 - 2008, 150 Years of Statehood.”

The highway entry point signs will be taken down in early 2009 but are available for adoption.  Anyone can purchase one of the 67 signs for $500 as a life-size commemorative of the state’s historic anniversary and take it home at the end of the sesquicentennial year.  The adoptions are on a first come first serve basis.

The signs are on sale now and anyone interested should contact the Sesquicentennial Commission soon.  You can contact them at 651-296-1870 or visit www.mn150years.org.

Habitat for Humanity House Dedicated

Friday, March 14th, 2008

I attended the dedication of Kathy Skalicky’s Habitat for Humanity House here in Elmore on Sunday, March 9th.  The tears, the cheers, and the people created a very moving experience.  And what was even more exciting was being present at the beginning of a “ripple in the pond”.  Kathy’s three children have physical proof of the many people that cared enough about them to build a home for them.  I hope to be able to watch the ripples spread.

Thrivent/Habitat for Humanity homes are not a “gift”.  The new owners have a mortgage on their home.  They have to put in a set number of “sweat equity” hours by working either on their own home or another Habitat house.  Kathy has had to attend classes with Thrivent rep Linda Steinhauer on money management, home maintenance, etc.

It’s a wonderful feeling seeing a new home constructed in our town.

Horizon Group Meeting 2/19/2008

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

At 6:30 p.m. on February 19, 2008 a Horizon Group Meeting was held.

Braving the snowy weather were: Evy Ford, Lorman Jahnke, Tina Rheinigans, Linda VanRavenhorst, Deb Jahnke, Bob Wegner, Joanne and Eldon Goeke, Margaret Sunderlin, Pat Donnelly, Lois Anderson, Edrys Viland, Pat Coupanger, Angi Cooke, and Clara Vereide.

Evy Ford welcomed everyone and reminded us that we will meet as a large group on the third Tuesday of every month.

Committee Reports were given.

YOUTH & FAMILY:  The following are events that this committe has held.

  • Santa Claus Day was a success.  34 people attended - many whole families.
  • Christmas Lighting contest: 70 homes participated
  • Snow Sculpture.  Mother Nature did not cooperate.  Seventeen children and nineteen adults participated.  There was a wonderful fire to keep them warm.  They served hot dogs, chips, cocoa, and cookies.  Different families attended this event than were at the Santa Claus Day.  February is Fun Sculpture month and runs until February 29th.

BEAUTIFICATION:  Future events in the planning are:

  • Clean Up Day for yard waste
  • Scavenger Hunt - people will place unwanted household items curbside
  • Lady Slipper garden club is meeting the 3rd Mondays of the month

Fall Festival:  At the March Horizon Group meeting we will form the committee for this event.  We did talk about several ideas for this festival.

  • Crafts
  • Ethnic food stands
  • Woodcarvers group from Blue Earth
  • Jewelry - Margaret and Frank Haag’s daughter Heidi creates wonderful jewelry.
  • Ugliest Woman contest - men dressed as women
  • Prettiest Legs contest
  • Cart or Bed races
  • Karoke
  • Talent show

One other item to remember when we set the date for the Festival is the other events taking place in the area:

  1. September:  St. John Church fall bazaar
  2. October:  Methodist Church fall bazaar
  3. November:  Shiloh Church fall bazaar and UHD Auxilary Craft show
  4. December:  Trinity Church Christmas bazaar

Horizon Leader Meeting 2/19/2008

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Members present were:  Pat Coupanger, Evy Ford, Margaret Sunderlin, Linda VanRavenhorst, Deb Jahnke, Angi Cooke, and Clara Vereide.

There will be no leader meeting on March 28, 2008.  On March 29, 2008 there will be a workshop sponsored by Extension in Fairmont with the following classes: Committees That Work, Non Profit 101, Fundraising and Resource Development, and Youth Engagement.

Our next regularly scheduled (the 3rd Tuesday of the month) Horizon meetings will be March 18, 2008.  Leaders meeting at 5:30 p.m. with the General meeting following at 6:30 p.m.

The 3rd Monday of the month the Lady Slippers garden club meets at 7:00 p.m.  Their next meeting is March 21, 2008 at the Elmore Library.  At their last meeting Bev Jahnke did a presentation on container gardening.  Discussion was held on planters with an 8 gallon water reservoir for use in plantings around the town.

Discussion was held regarding the Fall Festival.  This will be brought to the General meeting tonight.  We will have a seperate committee head this event.  We are looking at having this event the end of September or early October.  It was suggested that we look into the possibility of having a booth at the Faribault County Fair to advertise the Festival.

The following agenda was developed for tonight’s General meeting:

  • Welcome
  • Committee Reports:  what has happened since the supper and what their future plans are
    • Beautification
    • Youth
  • Get To Know You Neighbor picnic in August
  • Fall Festival
  • Reminder that they can join any committee at anytime
  • Beautification: Clean Up Day
    • Yard Waste
    • Scavenger Hunt
