Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Approximately 38 households participated by donating used items on April 29th!

It was a great way of cleaning out a closet and helping someone else in the process.

I hope this continues to be an annual event for our community.

Horizon Group Meeting 2/19/2008

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

At 6:30 p.m. on February 19, 2008 a Horizon Group Meeting was held.

Braving the snowy weather were: Evy Ford, Lorman Jahnke, Tina Rheinigans, Linda VanRavenhorst, Deb Jahnke, Bob Wegner, Joanne and Eldon Goeke, Margaret Sunderlin, Pat Donnelly, Lois Anderson, Edrys Viland, Pat Coupanger, Angi Cooke, and Clara Vereide.

Evy Ford welcomed everyone and reminded us that we will meet as a large group on the third Tuesday of every month.

Committee Reports were given.

YOUTH & FAMILY:  The following are events that this committe has held.

  • Santa Claus Day was a success.  34 people attended - many whole families.
  • Christmas Lighting contest: 70 homes participated
  • Snow Sculpture.  Mother Nature did not cooperate.  Seventeen children and nineteen adults participated.  There was a wonderful fire to keep them warm.  They served hot dogs, chips, cocoa, and cookies.  Different families attended this event than were at the Santa Claus Day.  February is Fun Sculpture month and runs until February 29th.

BEAUTIFICATION:  Future events in the planning are:

  • Clean Up Day for yard waste
  • Scavenger Hunt - people will place unwanted household items curbside
  • Lady Slipper garden club is meeting the 3rd Mondays of the month

Fall Festival:  At the March Horizon Group meeting we will form the committee for this event.  We did talk about several ideas for this festival.

  • Crafts
  • Ethnic food stands
  • Woodcarvers group from Blue Earth
  • Jewelry - Margaret and Frank Haag’s daughter Heidi creates wonderful jewelry.
  • Ugliest Woman contest - men dressed as women
  • Prettiest Legs contest

  2. October:  Methodist Church fall bazaar
  3. November:  Shiloh Church fall bazaar and UHD Auxilary Craft show

elmore glows

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

On December 15: Our Santa Party was a great success. We had 30+kids and their parents attend. They made ornaments and saw Santa. Elton and Sharon Rhoda decorated the bank meeting room and Lois Anderson, Deb Jahnke, Tina Rhengians, and Angie Cooke volunteerd their time and materials and V. Osterman along with other volunteers baked cookies and donated cocoa and cider.

On December 16th the Elmore Glows lighting was also a great success. 70 homes participated in lighting up our town. The Horizons, had handed out the lights on Dec 1 & 2 with the promise to turn them on the 16th to show pride and unity in our community. Although it was not an actual competition, we did drive around and evaluate the lighting efforts.

Rhonda & Craig Lloyd and Ray and Cheryl Knieland created the most simple, but elegant scenes on their lawns. Their use of lights exhibited balance, uniformity and color. The most lights used was by Don and Barb Stencil and Elton Rhoda’s and Sam Orvill’s . There was no lighting theme, but some very innovative ideas were used in putting up lights. For example, on the west side of town, a house had lights strung between trees creating a colorful clothesline mesh. Also Al Ferguson’s created a web of musical lights in front of his tree in the window.

Other lightings definitely worth mentioning were Roger & Arlys Holland–Shelley & Travis Risk–JoAnn & Dale Zimmerman–Alissa & Chris Mack–Chad Viland–Rochelle & Shane Rhengians–JoAnn & Mike Hearns–Sharon & John Wander–Rick & Rose Garvick–Joe & Deann Gonzales–Marv & Carol Boettcher–Clara Veriede–Bev & Lorman Jahnke– Mark & Janice Croom–Alvin & Joann Wirtjes– and last but not least, is Bob and Lois Wagner, who have inspired us with their annual decorationg and shown community pride for years.

There are many that decorated, but did not have their lights on or we unfortunately did not know their name, so please accept our apologys, if we missed your name. As we hope to make this an annual event with recognition and prizes, hopefully these individuals can sign up and join in the fun. Thank you all for making our city “glow” over the holidays.

MOMS is an acronym for Mother and Others of Military Service personnel.  Clara Vereide of Elmore and Gertrude Johnson of Blue Earth are co-chairs of the group.

This is a project that is very near and dear to our hearts as both Gertrude and I have sons in the military that were deployed to Iraq.  Gertrude’s son Hans was injured in Iraq when an IED exploded near his vehicle last June.  He is back stateside but continues to deal with his head injury.  My son Tyler completed his year deployment safely and is now stationed back in Germany.

In October 2007 we formed our group with the goal of sending packages to troops to remind them that the people back here still care.  The response from the people in this area was astounding!  We put out the word that for $15 you could send a package to a soldier.  We received over $3,000 in donations.  At the end of November we sent 100 boxes to over 50 soldiers.  Our packages contained homemade goodies, candy, movies, a Christmas tree, Christmas cards, drink mixes, lip balm, beef jerky, and other small trinkets.  Because of the response the cost of the boxes was closer to $25 per box.

We are now planning our Valentine box mailing.  On Tuesday, January 22nd, at 6:30 p.m. anyone interested in participating is welcome to join us at Double Play in Blue Earth for a planning meeting.

The area schools have already been contacted and the children will be making a Valentine for a soldier.  We hope to be able to pack each box with several Valentines.

We will be packing the boxes to send to our soldiers on January 31, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Blue Earth.

If you would like to send a Valentine to a soldier you may send your donations to:

Clara Vereide, 114 North Stockman Street, Elmore MN  56027.

Please join us either at the planning meeting or when we pack the boxes - it’s a wonderful treat for your own heart at Valentine’s!
