MOMS is an acronym for Mother and Others of Military Service personnel. Clara Vereide of Elmore and Gertrude Johnson of Blue Earth are co-chairs of the group.
This is a project that is very near and dear to our hearts as both Gertrude and I have sons in the military that were deployed to Iraq. Gertrude’s son Hans was injured in Iraq when an IED exploded near his vehicle last June. He is back stateside but continues to deal with his head injury. My son Tyler completed his year deployment safely and is now stationed back in Germany.
In October 2007 we formed our group with the goal of sending packages to troops to remind them that the people back here still care. The response from the people in this area was astounding! We put out the word that for $15 you could send a package to a soldier. We received over $3,000 in donations. At the end of November we sent 100 boxes to over 50 soldiers. Our packages contained homemade goodies, candy, movies, a Christmas tree, Christmas cards, drink mixes, lip balm, beef jerky, and other small trinkets. Because of the response the cost of the boxes was closer to $25 per box.
We are now planning our Valentine box mailing. On Tuesday, January 22nd, at 6:30 p.m. anyone interested in participating is welcome to join us at Double Play in Blue Earth for a planning meeting.
The area schools have already been contacted and the children will be making a Valentine for a soldier. We hope to be able to pack each box with several Valentines.
We will be packing the boxes to send to our soldiers on January 31, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Blue Earth.
If you would like to send a Valentine to a soldier you may send your donations to:
Clara Vereide, 114 North Stockman Street, Elmore MN 56027.
Please join us either at the planning meeting or when we pack the boxes - it’s a wonderful treat for your own heart at Valentine’s!
